Mailing Instructions and Information when sending care packages overseas

The following are a few suggestions and helpful hints for sending mail overseas.  You can also go online at: for more information.

  • You can mail all packages by Priority Mail, Parcel Post or Flat Rate.  Only the Postal Service delivers to an APO and FPO address.
  • You may use any size box allowable by the Postal Service to send your care packages.  Regular Box from home – You will pay according to weight.
  • Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes are available FREE from the Post Office.
  • Small Box (8 5/8” x 5 3/8” x 1 5/8”)          $5.80 to ship
  • Medium Box (11” x 8 ½” x 5 ½”)              $12.35 to ship
  • Large Box (12” x 12” x 5 1/2”)                  $14.85 when shipped to APO/FPO address
  • Customs form for packages:  PS Form 2976-A, from the post office is required for mail weighing 16 ounces or more.
  • Mail delivery time varies, but typically military mail letters take between 7-10 days for delivery depending on country of destination.  Packages can take between 10-24 days for delivery depending on designation.
  • Keep your packages small and keep products and food in the ORIGINAL MANUFACTURER’S wrap and/or box to facilitate quicker inspections and final delivery.  Do NOT, for any reason, or in ANY amount, include food items in a care package with perfumed hygiene items or chemicals of any type.  Send a food ONLY or non-food package.  You would not believe how even factory sealed cookies taste when they have lived together in the same package with bath soap for 2 weeks during delivery especially in 120 degree heat.  PLEASE use separate boxes.
  • Put any liquids (shampoo, conditioner, lotion, etc.) in zip lock bags in case the containers burst or leak in transit.
  • APO Guidelines for Sending Overseas Military Mail and Packages.  Each country has custom regulations that apply to all incoming mail.  Check the USPS for exact information.  The following items are strictly prohibited:
  1. Obscene articles (prints, paintings, cards, films, videotapes, etc.)
  2. Pork or pork by-products.
  3. No Perishable Products.
  4. Bulk quantities of religious materials contrary to the Islamic faith.  Items for the personal use of the addressee are permissible.
  5. Firearms, weapons or fireworks.
  6. No aerosol items and any item under pressure
